The facility needs a renovation and expansion. Washrooms are limited and there are many commuters at the Ajax GO station. Having the most commuters in Durham Region, you would expect better.
There's a lot of parking but it is very spread out. The parking lot should have really been built along the track instead further from it. I know this maybe a stretch, would take a lot time and money. But it would have been better to make an underground tunnel from the parking that would connect to the current tunnel at the station. Then the overhead one that was made; which everyone still crosses the street instead. The bigger issue is that there's only one way in and out. I think it would be best to tear down the plaza; the east Mario's and daycare have been closed for years. That space could be used to make a separate entrance for the buses to enter and exit the station. Similar to Pickering go station. Possibly a Tim Hortons and a legitimate ATM would helpful as well. The Durham go train stations are the busiest on the Lakeshore east line and should be set the bar in terms of customer service.
We started taking the Go from Ajax to Union from June 2018. There's ton of parking, especially if you reach by 7:30am. The covered parking garage has 6 levels. 5 levels get filled up by 8:15am, 6th level is virtually empty. The station gets really busy during rush hours, but you'll still get a seat. Train gets full after Pickering. However, things may get worse after schools reopen. So, fingers crossed!!
Pros: ...I'm trying to think of something other than "you can take the train into the city" but nothing comes to mind.Cons: Nowhere near enough parking spaces to support the vast number of people commuting to Toronto. Parking structure spot indicators are not accurate at times, and the layout of the station is a nightmare as both local traffic and busses fight to exit during peak hours. I use this station out of necessity, not desire. Ajax is a commuter town and the planning for this station was very poorly done. From the lack of available parking spaces, to the horribly designed entrance/exit - particularly the fact that there is only one left lane to go north on Westney (leading to a huge back up during peak hours) - it can take up to 30 min just to leave the station. I want to like GO Transit, and a lot of what they've done has been beneficial to the residents of Ontario, but seemingly obvious situations like this one make me question how their station planners/designers dropped the ball so terribly.
